EMDR Therapy

A research-backed way to help your brain finally let go of what it has been holding onto.

Some pain does not respond to talking about it. You can understand exactly why you react the way you do, say all the right insights out loud in session & still feel the same knot in your chest when something triggers you. That is not a failure on your part, it usually just means the memory is stored in a part of the brain that talk therapy alone does not fully reach. That is where EMDR comes in.

EMDR Therapy in New Jersey

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured, research-backed therapy originally developed for trauma & PTSD & now used widely for anxiety, grief & painful memories that keep resurfacing.

Simply: your brain has a natural way of processing difficult experiences, similar to what happens during REM sleep. Sometimes, though, especially with trauma, a memory gets "stuck," stored with all its original emotional charge instead of settling into the past where it belongs. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (usually guided eye movements, though tapping can also be used) while you briefly focus on the memory, helping your brain finish processing it. Over time, the memory stops feeling like it's happening right now & starts feeling like something that happened. It will become something you survived, not something you are still living inside of.

You do not have to describe every detail of what happened out loud for EMDR to work, which is part of why it can feel different.

What Is EMDR?

  • Childhood trauma & family-of-origin pain

  • Big-T trauma (accidents, abuse, loss) & little-t trauma (the accumulation of smaller painful moments that still shape you)

  • Anxiety & panic that feels bigger than the situation calls for

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or a nervous system that is stuck in fight-or-flight

  • Shame & self-worth wounds that trace back to specific moments or messages you received early on

  • Grief that has not been able to move

  • Pain that is hard to put into words because EMDR does not require you to fully verbalize it to heal from it

What EMDR Can Help With

We will not start with EMDR on day one. Before we ever do reprocessing work, we spend time building trust, understanding your history & making sure you have tools to stay grounded & regulated. This groundwork matters because EMDR works with your nervous system & your nervous system needs to feel safe enough with me first.

Once we begin, sessions are held virtually & I will guide you through the process step by step, checking in with you throughout. You are always in control so we will go at the pace your system can handle.
